Abstract: This article is an analysis of national censuses and of how they can contribute to the historical study of the indigenous population in Brazil. I compare and criticize the existing data, explaining them in the context of the demographic evolution of the ethnic groups in Brazilian society. I relate statistical data, social representations, and historical interpretations about the Brazilian Indians.
